2001 - On Going

Like the beginning of a detective story, an email with an attached photograph led me to an antique shop in Shanghai that sold old Jewish gravestones.

There were four Jewish cemeteries located in Shanghai before 1949 and the Communist Revolution. They all disappeared.

The search for the lost cemeteries takes us from the antique shop to the outskirts of Shanghai, where we started locating various lost graves in the village area.

The journalistic research turned from a personal quest to unearthing as many lost tombstones as I could find. To collect and restore them with the goal of creating a befitting memorial place for them within the city of Shanghai.

It has been more than two decades since we found the first gravestone, and the goal is yet to be approved by the local authorities.
